A recent visitor to the Frisco Native American Museum and vice president of the Outer Banks Stamp Club, John Webster, recognized that stamps have an important story to tell because they not only depict specific moments in history, they also reflect changes in cultural awareness and understanding. He approached staff about a possible exhibit, and that possibility has grown into a collaboration with the Outer Banks Stamp Club to create a new and exciting exhibit for the museum.
Since the first US stamp went on sale in 1847, thousands of stamps have been issued with a huge range of themes: animals, flowers, sports, art, famous people. . . Among those groups, sixty-three stamps have been issued that deal specifically with Native American figures and Native American culture. Many others honor individuals with Native American ancestry, and a number of foreign countries have issued stamps depicting US Native American figures.
Museum staff are working with the Outer Banks Stamp Club to create this most important exhibit and hope to have it ready by early April 2022.
