26 November 2012; Beaded Rosettes

Many of the Plains tribes are known for their exceptional beadwork. A design that is seen most often is a rosette, as pictured here. While a European or American rosette will typically be a flower made out of ribbon, the Natives depicted flowers and stars with tiny seed bead which were previously featured on THIS POST. These were made by tightly stitching beads onto a circular piece of leather, felt, birch bark, or other sturdy backing.

The piece in this week’s feature has been made to be worn into a necklace. Even the long neck band has been constructed with delicate beadwork! During current events, such as a Powwow, it is still common to see them adorning regalia. Rosettes can be used as a neckace, on head gear, or even in the center of a feather bustle! Have you seen a rosette before? If you have made rosettes, we invite you to share images of them to help show the variety and different styles!
