This weekend was a wonderful event!
Thanks to a grant from the Outer Banks Community Foundation and the Dare County Arts Council (and a lot of hard work), our Volunteers greeted our guests in their pre-contact dress as the sun shown from above to discuss tanning, traditional cooking, native life, music, teaching how to make rope, and even getting their name translated into the Cherokee language!
There were plenty of opportunities to dance
We were blessed with a Tuscarora singer that led the dances where our visitors of all ages were encouraged to participate.
But that wasn’t all
The example of the garden was started with a lot of work from contributors great and small and even some visitors from nature herself! We also served food that would have been eaten by our local natives such as yaupon tea, squash soup, and rabbit stew!
We even had interactive music
Our drum circles also invited visitors to participate by trying their skills with a hand drum made in a traditional way!
Everyone that participated had a wonderful time and we’re grateful that we got to share our knowledge!
