The figure featured here a tihu, or what is commonly call a Kachina Doll. Kachinas originate out of the Pubelo tribes of the Southwest and each one represents a different spirit in the world; from clouds to bears and from clowns to mothers. Even though most will call it a “doll” they are not traditionally given to children to play with.
Some Kachinas are made in the image of animals. The one pictured here is called Kocha Honau, or the White Bear. There are many different styles of Bear, or Hon, Kachina. Some, such as this one, are easily distinguished by their prominent colors of yellow, white, black or blue. Although his long snout and tall ears may give the impression of a wolf, White Wolf is considered a hunter and depicted with a bow instead of the rattle that is seen here. Kocha Honau, like all Bear Kachinas, are considered to be great healers, capable of curing many illnesses
