10 December 2012 Makah Basket

The Pacific Northwest is well known for its amazing baskets made from cedar and local grasses. Some baskets made in this are were woven so tightly they were able to easily hold water! The lidded basket that pictured here is approximately 2 inches tall and is common to the Makah tribe, which is located in the coastal area of Washington State.

Making a basket with a lid can considerably more difficult to weave than one without a lid. The difficulty comes from making the lid fit snugly on the rim of the basket without being so tight that it is troublesome to put on or remove. Have you ever made a basket or pot with a lid? What would you store in a basket like this?
