There is an odd dusty shade of purple on the flower in the center of this shot. The wasp sitting on the flower is a very unique wasp and part of a larger group called flower wasps. This male has a false stinger at the very last segment of their body. It is mostly black and quite skinny. The abdomen segments are edged in a bright yellow and there are five visible, giving it the common name the Five-banded thynnid. The wings are also quite long. Though they’re folded back, you can see that they start with a rusty-brown color and fade into black.
