SUMMARY:Warships and Armor; The Tlingit People
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Frisco Native American Museum by…..\njoining Leandra Lewis as she shares the extraordinary culture and life of the Tlingit people. \nThe Tlingit are an indigenous tribe of the Pacific Northwest coast of North America\, primarily in British Columbia and Alaska. They have a colorful history and culture that dates back thousands of years! \nWhile it is known they are master wood workers that make stunning totem poles\, did you know they also constructed large houses and incredible art as well? Perhaps most impressive are the war canoes\, wooden armor\, and claim they traded with the Chinese before they ever met Europeans. \nAs Leandra lived in Sitka\, Alaska and worked with several Tlingit tribal members\, she brings her experience to the Frisco Native American Museum to share with you! You’ll not want to miss this opportunity to see some beautiful examples of Tlingit art and hear Leandra share stories of these phenomenal people. \nEvent is FREE with museum admission \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n More\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:2nd Annual Museum Day
DESCRIPTION:We’re so excited to be offering our 2nd Annual Museum Appreciation Day!\nOn Saturday\, September 27\, 2025\, individuals will have an opportunity to visit the Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center with only a small donation of a non-perishable food item – NO admission fee.  We are pleased to continue the tradition that the Smithsonian Museum Day Live started (and unfortunately no longer sponsors) with a day dedicated to the celebration of exploration and learning. \n\n\n\nArrangements for free admission are easy.  Attendees simply need to bring at least one can of food per person which will be donated to the Hatteras Island Food Pantry.   Of course\, other food pantry items are also welcomed. \n\n\n\nVisitors will  find exhibits\, beautiful art work and displays on Native American culture from tribes across the United States as well as a gallery on the original inhabitants of Hatteras Island.  The Hatteras Island gallery provides an opportunity to “experience” the forest\, sit in a longhouse\, and hear a Native American tale. The gift shop offers a wide array of beautiful items as well as a bookstore. Visitors may also enjoy  the nature trail which includes winding paths and examples of village life prior to European contact with a longhouse\, fishing weir\, ceremonial poles\, and a dugout canoe.  The trail even offers a “story walk” with displays that slowly unfold a suspense-filled Native American legend. \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n More\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Story Telling & Music with Aio Blue Heron Sifu
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous tribes are a diverse group of people with many languages and varied traditions. Historically\, most of the stories about us have been told by those outside our communities. The importance of storytelling and art in Native American communities cannot be overstated. For our people it is a method of community care and healing. It is also a powerful way to reclaim our voices\, histories and empower our communities. \nMuscogee Storyteller and Musician Aio Blue Heron Sifu will be sharing her original music and stories\, both old and new. Her works speak of the power of connecting to the natural world and honoring our histories. The relationships Native Americans have with animals\, plants\, and the world. Native storytelling has always sought to teach and entertain and she carries on this tradition with grace. \nWe encourage the use of storytelling in our museum through invited presenters\, videos of Native stories from the community itself\, or through books by Native authors. \nWe will be featuring this event for two days at both 11AM and 2PM so please double check your date before RSVP-ing! \nThis event is created in part with help from the Dare Arts Council \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n More\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading...
