Our Nature Trail always has an abundance of interesting plants to learn about

Thanks to long time friend of the museum, Bob Glennon, we now know about a new (to us) species you can see! This plant is called the Peppervine (Ampelopsis arborea) and you can look for it just as you enter the trail on the left.

Peppervine is a fast growing plant

According to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center,
This species’ traditional name, Peppervine, referred to the acrid, peppery taste of the stems and leaves, which Native Americans chewed as a remedy for colds and sore throats. It is said that, in later years, the crushed roots were placed in the nostrils of tired horses to revive them.
