12 September 2023; Bead Kits

Have you ever wanted to be able to learn how to do some of the delicate beadwork that you see in our exhibits?

Now you can! The museum staff has created a kit that contains everything to make your very own beaded bracelet! Peyote stitch, sometimes called gourd stitch, is one of the most common “off-the-loom” stitches used. This means you don’t need any extra tools or equipment, such as a bead loom, to get started!

What will you find in our kits?

  • Easy to follow pattern and instructions with helpful illustrations
  • Enough materials to make a bracelet able to fit up to most adult wrists
  • Size 6 glass seed beads we included are larger than what was typically used, making them great to learn with
  • The strong, nylon beading thread is resistant to breaking and easier to tie knots that stay in place than many fishing lines style string
  • Glass bead clasp so no worries about metal sensitivities

But perhaps the most important thing you will find is the enjoyment of learning a traditional craft that you can continue to create new, beautiful designs of your own with! Once you learn the basics of peyote stitch, the possibilities are endless!

Stop in and ask our museum staff about the kits and pick one out for you and a friend on your next visit
