Hurricane Matthew was devastating to the lower towns of Hatteras Island. Frisco, where we are located, had record flooding for the area. The museum itself, had water through the floors of all the exhibits. The pavilion on the trail had several feet. This water not only saturated and moved our structures and displays, it brought with it a terrible sludge.
This means that we have a long, hard road ahead of us. To ensure the safety of our visitors and our staff, we must remove many of the floors and walls. After the hurricane, we were blessed to have some of our Village Day volunteers as well as a group of US Coast Guard and even a few kind-hearted tourists offering to lend a hand in stripping the carpet, packing artifacts, moving cases, and removing damaged displays.
Exhibits have been emptied and packed. Cases that were able to be salvaged were moved so the remediation crew could start the hefty job of tearing out the walls.
But we are looking to the light at the end of the tunnel. Our wiring has been replaced and we look forward to the time when we can install updated cases, lighting, flooring, and even some new signage! Maybe we’ll even have some big surprises to share closer to our re-opening!
